How To Fix Hp Printer Not Printing Black

January 17 2020

Hp printer not printing black is a very common issue and can result from a variety of reasons, such as missing or outdated drivers, faulty connections, poor Windows configurations, etc. Even simple things like no ink or paper jam can cause frustration with hp printer not printing black.

Here are a few ideas you might want to walk through to try to fix your issues with HP printers.

  • Solution 1: Check Printer Status

  • Solution 2: Cancel Print Jobs for your HP

  • Solution 3: Set HP Printer to Default

  • Solution 4: Basic HP Printer Troubleshooting

  • Solution 5: Update HP Printer Driver

SOLUTION 1: Check HP Printer Status

First, let's start with the simple and obvious stuff

1) Make sure your HP printer has enough paper in your paper tray. When paper exists then make sure that none of it is trapped in the paper feed or jammed. If there is, please check the best way to remove the paper with your supplier since you don't want to damage the internal motor or paper feeder.

2) Is it hollow ink or toner? Consult the manual for your particular printer to see how to test your printer's ink or toner level. New HP printers can view the ink rates quickly, or if there is an ink problem on the HP printer's front screen.

SOLUTION 2: Cancel all HP Printer Jobs

Clean out stuck print jobs on your HP Printer This is a little more sophisticated but not too complex to try. Many times during an HP printer's life, jobs you submit to it for printing can get stuck in the queue for printing.

If the job in question stays in the print queue it can stop all other printing from usually occurring on your HP printer. Clearing the print queue of all jobs, in this case, will help to get the newer print requests to go through just fine. Let's go!

  1. Go to your Windows Control Panel and click "Devices and Printers"

  2. You can access your control panel by typing "Control Panel" in the search bar on Windows 10 or in older versions of windows by pressing the Windows logo key and the "R" key on your keyboard to open the Run dialog at the same time. Type "power" in this dialog, and hit Enter. In most Windows operating systems this will open Control Panel.

  3. Find your HP Printer in the Print Devices list, make sure it's the one you have issues with. Right-click on that printer and from the drop-down list pick "See what's printing."

  4. Tap the "Printer" menu item at the top right when the new page opens, and pick "Open as Administrator" from the drop-down menu

  5. Open the menu item "Printer" in AGAIN at the top right and click "Cancel all papers"  A confirmation dialog window can open at this point, and you will need to confirm that you want to clear all the documents in the print queue by clicking "Yes"

Now try running a print on that HP printer again to see if that was the issue.  Please try the next steps if that didn't work.

SOLUTION 3: Set Your HP Printer As Default Printer

Would you send the print jobs to the wrong printer? Let's just test!

Typically, Windows can submit the print job to what's called the default printer when you send a print order. If all of your printers are hooked up but nothing is printing, your HP Printer might not be set to Windows by default.

So all your requests for printing don't go to your printer but into a blank space of no return. Let's make sure your HP is Standard Printer.

1. Go to your Windows Control Panel and choose "Displays and Printers"

Through typing "Control Panel" in the search bar on Windows 10 or in older versions of Windows, you can reach your control panel through pressing the Windows logo key and "R" key on your keyboard to open the Run dialog at the same time. Type "control" in this dialog, and hit Enter. In most Windows operating systems this will open Control Panel.

2. Find your HP Printer in the Print Devices list, make sure it's the one you have problems with. Right-click on that printer and from the drop-down menu pick "Set as Default Printer." Please ensure that you press "Yes" when there is a confirmation prompt

Go check to see if this helped you with your printing!

SOLUTION 4: HP Printer Troubleshooting

Ok, umm. Are the lights on and are they connected?

Asking does not hurt. There are some really simple troubleshooting things you can do to make sure that if it stops working or has never worked, you can print to your HP printer.

Next, test the wall power link cables to the HP Printer power connector. Then test the cabling that might be attached from your printer to the Windows PC, is the USB cable firmly in place at both ends?

If the HP printer is running a network cable for HP network printing, make sure that the Ethernet cable is secure and check your manual to see if lights are blinking to show a network connection.

Are the front of your HP printer lights on? If they aren't and the printer isn't waiting to be turned on, try unplugging it and plug it back in. Then make sure on the printer itself you click the power on button.  If the light is not yet on, maybe try another power plug in your home just in case the outlet is out.

If nothing works and your printer just won't turn on, then you might need to take it directly to a service center or call HP support for hardware support.
